De Anza College, Science Center
21250 Stevens Creek Blvd., Cupertino, CA 95014
Architect:
Anshen + Allen
Project Description
The De Anza Science Center is a 46,400-square-foot
biology and chemistry complex completed in 2004 as a new
addition to De Anza College, Cupertino, CA. The facility
includes two in-ground hydraulic elevators, a 3500 lb.
passenger and a 5000 lb. freight, designed and built in
compliance with
DSA
requirements. The facility is
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)
certified.
RCB Elevator Consulting, LLC worked as a subcontractor to
Eddington Engineering, Structural Engineers to provide
elevator consulting and drafting/design services. Our
function was to provide engineering services to
Anshen + Allen Architects in the preparation of the
building design drawings and engineering specific to the
elevators.
Both
OSHPD and
DSA
projects require submission of an engineering package that
include drawings and calculations prepared by a California
licensed structural engineer. These requirements
extend to permanent building mechanical systems including
HVAC, sprinkler systems and elevators. Often, due to
the differences in proprietary systems, the final design and
submission process is deferred until after the work is
awarded to the specialty contractor responsible for that
system. That contractor will then be responsible to
prepare the necessary "Deferred Approval" submittal package.
Conversely, often in the interest of expediting the project,
the original building design team will incorporate into
their complete submittal package the final design for these
building mechanical systems. Such was the case in this
project.
Eddington Engineering, supported by RCB Elevator
Consulting, LLC, prepared a comprehensive but sufficiently
generic design for the elevator installation allowing
flexibility as to the final elevator manufacturer and
installer. To maintain drawing style and consistency,
we worked within
Anshen + Allen Architects drawing templates, paper size,
line weights, fonts, text styles, etc.
This collaboration of design and engineering has lead to
a very successful project. See more about the
De Anza College, Science Center and their
grand opening flier.
